MAKING CLIPS

How long should a clip be?

Updated September 28, 2026

SHORT ANSWER

How long should a clip be?

A clip should be as long as its moment needs, inside two sets of limits. Campaigns set the floor: on Clipster's public list on September 25, 2026, clipping campaigns that stated a minimum asked for 6 to 10 seconds, and four capped clips at 60 seconds. Platforms set the ceiling for reach: Instagram does not recommend reels over 3 minutes, YouTube counts vertical videos up to 3 minutes as Shorts, and X allows 140 seconds without Premium, while TikTok's Creator Rewards Program pays only on videos of at least 1 minute. No platform publishes an ideal length, so judge length by your own retention data, not by rules of thumb.

Three things decide the length

Length is not a style choice for a paid clipper. Three sets of rules come first, and the content decides only what is left:

  • The campaign brief. It can set a minimum, a maximum, or both. A clip outside them may not count.
  • The platform's limits. Each app has a hard upload limit and, more important, a length above which it stops recommending the video or changes its format.
  • The payout program. If you also want money from the platform itself, its length rule applies. TikTok's is the strict one.

Inside those limits, the rule is simple: start at the setup, end right after the payoff, and cut everything that does not serve the moment.

Platform limits (September 2026)

The upload limits are generous. The limits that change results are lower: 3 minutes on Instagram and YouTube, 140 seconds on X without Premium, and 1 minute as a minimum on TikTok if you want Creator Rewards.

YouTube ShortsSquare or vertical up to 3 minutes counts as a ShortLonger vertical videos are long-form, not ShortsNone; Shorts revenue is shared by engaged views
X140 seconds without Premium; under 4 hours with PremiumNone publishedNone; Original Content Rewards pays on qualified impressions

Two music and copyright rules also depend on length. TikTok says Creator Rewards videos with copyrighted music "for over one minute are at risk of being muted." On YouTube, Shorts longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim used to be blocked; YouTube's three-minute Shorts page says that from September 24, 2026 they "will no longer be automatically blocked," though some older help pages still describe blocking. Most Shorts audio library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a Short; some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.

What campaigns ask for: Clipster data

Clipster lets each campaign set a minimum length in a dedicated field, and some campaigns also write length rules in their brief. We read both for the 22 active clipping campaigns on Clipster's public list on September 25, 2026 (see live Clipster campaign data):

Length ruleClipping campaigns (of 22)
Minimum 6 seconds1
Minimum 7 seconds8
Minimum 8 seconds2
Minimum 10 seconds (length field)1
"10s minimum / 60s maximum" written in the brief4
No length rule stated6

No clipping campaign asked for more than 10 seconds as a minimum, and the only stated maximum was 60 seconds, in four music-artist campaigns. Across all 88 public campaigns, including music, logo and UGC types, 28 used the minimum-length field, with values from 6 to 12 seconds.

Clipster's general campaign rules add two platform-wide rules: music campaign posts "must be over 10 seconds long," and in logo campaigns an animated logo must stay visible for the required duration, "typically 7–25+ seconds, varies by asset."

The takeaway: campaign minimums are low. They filter out micro-clips; they do not push you toward long clips. The one common rule that does push toward long clips is TikTok's 1-minute Creator Rewards minimum, and that program rarely pays for clips of other people's footage anyway (see TikTok rules for clippers).

What the platforms themselves say about length

The official guidance is thin, and none of it names an ideal length for organic posts:

  • Instagram: "Pull the viewer in within the first 3 seconds, and keep them interested the whole time." And: "In order to be recommended, your content has to be 3 minutes or less."
  • TikTok: a view counts toward Creator Rewards only if it lasts more than 5 seconds; Search views count at 30 seconds or more. TikTok describes the program as rewarding "high-quality, long-form" videos of 1 minute or more.
  • YouTube: for Shorts ads, Google says videos can run up to 3 minutes but "only the first 60 seconds will play on the Shorts feed," and recommends ads under 60 seconds. That is ad guidance, not a rule for organic Shorts.

Many sites publish an "ideal clip length" with a retention percentage attached. We did not find those figures in any platform's own documentation, so this page does not repeat them.

How to choose the length of one clip

  1. Find the payoff. The line, reaction or result that makes the moment worth watching.
  2. Find the shortest setup that makes the payoff land. Start there, not at the beginning of the topic.
  3. Cut dead air inside the clip. Pauses, filler words, repeated points.
  4. End right after the payoff. Do not wait for the next topic to start.
  5. Check the limits. Above the campaign minimum, under its maximum, under 3 minutes for Instagram and Shorts, under 140 seconds for X without Premium.
  6. If the moment is too long, split it or pick a different moment. Each part must stand alone; do not post near-duplicate cuts of the same footage, which both TikTok and Instagram treat as unoriginal.

Worked example (assumptions labeled). Assume a podcast answer runs 2 minutes 40 seconds from question to punchline, and the campaign caps clips at 60 seconds. Removing the host's long question and two tangents leaves a 1:25 cut; that is still over the cap. So the clip starts at the guest's first surprising claim and ends on the punchline: 48 seconds, inside a 10-second minimum and a 60-second maximum. The same moment for a campaign with no maximum could run the full 1:25 on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, and, at 85 seconds, it would also fit X's 140-second limit without Premium.

Measure retention instead of guessing

The only length data that applies to your account is your own. TikTok Studio, Instagram insights and YouTube Analytics all show how long viewers watch. Use them this way:

  • Compare average watch time with clip length for 10 or more clips, not one.
  • Look for where viewers leave. If most leave before the payoff, the setup is too long; cut it, do not add to it.
  • Test length across different moments, not by reposting the same moment at two lengths. Instagram warns that trial reels "may get limited reach" if you have shared the same content before, and duplicate posts can be treated as unoriginal.
  • Keep campaign rules fixed while you test. A clip that performs well but breaks the campaign minimum still may not be paid.

Common length mistakes

  • Padding a clip past 1 minute for TikTok Creator Rewards when the account cannot qualify for the program anyway.
  • Cutting below the campaign minimum, for example a 5-second reaction for a campaign with a 7-second floor.
  • Posting a 3-minute-plus reel and expecting Instagram to recommend it.
  • Posting a 1–3 minute Short with claimed music or footage without checking its status in YouTube Studio.
  • Uploading a 2:30 clip to X from an account without Premium; the limit is 140 seconds.
  • Letting copyrighted music run past one minute in a TikTok video meant for Creator Rewards.

Questions

What is the minimum length for a paid clip?

It depends on the campaign. On Clipster's public list on September 25, 2026, clipping campaigns that stated a minimum asked for 6 to 10 seconds. Check each brief, because a clip below the minimum may not count.

Does TikTok pay for clips under one minute?

Not through the Creator Rewards Program, which requires videos of at least one minute. A clipping campaign can still pay for shorter clips, because the campaign pays from its own budget.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes for square or vertical videos, since October 15, 2024. Longer vertical videos are treated as long-form.

How long can an Instagram reel be and still be recommended?

Instagram allows reels up to 20 minutes, but says reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences.

Are 30-second clips better than 60-second clips?

No platform publishes that. Retention depends on the moment and the edit. Compare average watch time in your own analytics across many clips, and cut setups that viewers skip.

What is the longest clip I can post on X?

140 seconds without Premium. Premium subscribers can upload videos under 4 hours.
