YOUTUBE CHAPTERS TO CLIPS
Clip a YouTube video by its own chapters
Paste a YouTube link. FastClip lists the video's chapters under the player. Press Clip next to a chapter to set the start and end to it, then make a clip with captions, in the original frame or vertical 9:16.
Free, no credit card, no watermark. One chapter at a time, up to 5 minutes a clip.
How to turn a YouTube chapter into a clip
1. Paste the link
Paste the YouTube link, or upload the video file (up to 5 GB). FastClip reads the chapters with the video's details.
2. Find the chapter
The chapters are listed under the player, and a strip above the start timeline shows where each one begins. Tap a chapter to play from its start. The list says where the chapters come from.
3. Press Clip
Clip sets the start and end to the chapter. A chapter longer than 5 minutes gets its first 5 minutes. Move the start and end to where the thought begins and ends.
4. Make the clip
Press Make clip, or Clip & stay to keep choosing chapters. Then finish it: original frame or vertical 9:16, word-timed captions. Download the MP4, or post it to Instagram or X from FastClip.
If a YouTube link does not work
YouTube refuses many downloads from FastClip's servers, so a pasted YouTube link can fail. The chapters can still show, because FastClip reads them with the video's details, not from the video file. To finish the clip, upload the file: the page then shows an “Upload this video” button, and the clips you chose continue from the file.
Where the chapters come from
FastClip uses the first source that has chapters, in this order:
- The video's chapters. The chapters you see on YouTube's progress bar, set by the uploader or added by YouTube automatically.
- Timestamps in the description. If the video has no chapters, FastClip reads a list of times and titles in the description, such as “0:00 Intro” or “Intro (1:02:03)”. It needs at least 3 different times and ignores times after the end of the video.
- Chapters in an uploaded file. For a video you upload, FastClip reads the chapters stored in the file, or a list of timestamps in its description or comment field.
With none of these, FastClip shows no chapter list. It does not invent chapters with AI. Find the moment in the transcript, in YouTube's “Most replayed” graph or with your bookmarks. For an audio file, FastClip names the chapter that is playing, but shows no chapter list.
YouTube's rules for chapters
If you own the video, you can add chapters yourself with timestamps in the description. YouTube's rules (YouTube Help, read October 14, 2026):
- Start at zero. The first timestamp must be 00:00.
- At least three. List at least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- At least 10 seconds. Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
- Not every video. Not all videos get automatic chapters. A channel with active strikes, or a video that may be inappropriate for some viewers, gets no chapters.
In practice: a chapter is a topic, not a clip. A 12-minute chapter holds several clips. Use the chapter to find the topic, then cut the one complete thought that works alone.
How to pick a chapter that works as a clip
Pick a chapter whose title is a claim, a question or a story, not “Intro” or “Sponsor”. Watch its first 30 seconds: a chapter often starts with a transition sentence, so move the start to the first sentence of the thought. Keep Shorts and Reels short; our guide on clip length has the numbers. For several chapters, use Clip & stay: each chapter becomes its own clip, and each uses one clip of your plan.
Questions
Can FastClip split a YouTube video into all its chapters at once?
No. You clip one chapter at a time, and a clip can be up to 5 minutes. FastClip makes clips with captions. It is not a downloader that saves every chapter as a file.
What if a chapter is longer than 5 minutes?
Clip sets the end 5 minutes after the start of the chapter. Move the start and end to the part you want, or make two clips.
What if the video has no chapters?
FastClip shows no chapter list. Find the moment in the transcript, in the “Most replayed” graph or with your bookmarks.
Does it work with a video I upload?
Yes, if the file has chapters, or a list of timestamps in its description or comment field.
Can an AI agent clip a chapter for me?
Yes. A connected agent gets the chapters of a video from FastClip's MCP server and cuts the one you name. See Clip a chapter with an AI agent.
Do chapter clips count toward my plan?
Yes, like every clip. The free plan has 100 finished clips in total and up to 30 finished clips a day.
