# Five TikTok algorithm claims from 2026, checked against TikTok's own words

> Are the 2026 TikTok algorithm claims true: a 70% completion bar, follower-first testing, an April Oracle switch, a multi-day refresh and Shop boosts?

## Short answer

None of the five had a TikTok source as of October 4, 2026. TikTok says watch time and finishing a video are ranking signals but publishes no completion threshold, and it said in 2020 that follower count is not a direct ranking factor. The US joint venture said on January 23, 2026 that it "will retrain" the algorithm, with no public timeline. The only official TikTok Shop rule about reach goes the other way: TikTok reduces the visibility of content that sends buyers off-platform in Shop markets.

## How we tested each claim

Algorithm claims spread fast among clippers because reach decides pay. A claim that sounds precise, such as a number or a date, spreads fastest. We tested five claims that were common in 2026 with three questions:

- **Where did it start?** We traced each claim to the earliest page we could find and checked what that page cites.
- **What does TikTok say?** We compared it with TikTok's Transparency Center, Newsroom, Creator Academy and Community Guidelines.
- **What would prove it?** We asked what evidence would settle the claim, and whether anyone has shown it.

| Claim | Source we traced | What TikTok says | Verdict |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Clips need about 70% completion to go viral, up from 50% | Creator and marketing blogs, for example PostEverywhere (February 3, 2026), with no citation | Watch time and finishes are signals; no threshold published | Unsupported |
| New videos are tested on followers first | Micky Weis blog (January 14, 2026), framed as an expected change | Follower count is not a direct factor (2020); follows are one signal | Unsupported |
| The US feed switched to an Oracle-retrained model in April 2026 | Blogs citing a Spectrum News piece of April 19, 2026 | Retraining is planned; no switch date announced | Unsupported as dated |
| A For You refresh now takes several days | SocialBee, citing a Threads post (March 2026) | Refresh gives a fresh feed of popular content; no duration given | Unsupported |
| TikTok Shop content gets a ranking boost | Marketing blogs, for example PostEverywhere (March 17, 2026) | Visibility is reduced for off-platform buying prompts; no boost described | Unsupported |

A myth here means a claim with no primary source. Some myths may be partly true. Without evidence, you should not plan your clips around them.

## Claim 1: "You need 70% completion" has no TikTok source

The claim says a video needs about 70% of viewers to finish it before TikTok pushes it wider, and that the bar rose from about 50% in 2024. PostEverywhere's guide, published February 3, 2026, states that the threshold "has jumped from 50% to 70%." It gives no source for either number.

TikTok does treat watching and finishing as important. Its Transparency Center says the system predicts how likely you are to "finish, skip, or favorite a video" and to spend a certain amount of time viewing it. Its 2020 Newsroom post said finishing a longer video from beginning to end receives "greater weight." For the Creator Rewards Additional Reward, TikTok says "watch time is a key factor."

What TikTok has never published is a fixed percentage. The way TikTok describes ranking also argues against one. The system combines several predicted actions into one score per viewer, then sorts candidates by score. That is a comparison between videos for one person, not a pass mark. This is our reading of TikTok's description, not a TikTok statement.

The only fixed numbers TikTok publishes in this area are payout rules, not ranking rules. A Creator Rewards qualified view needs at least five seconds of watch time, or 30 seconds for a search view. Those numbers decide pay, not distribution.

## Claim 2: "Follower-first testing" started as a prediction

The claim says each new video is shown first to a group of your followers, and only goes to non-followers if they react well. The earliest version we found is on Micky Weis's blog, published January 14, 2026. Its introduction says that "In 2026, TikTok is expected to introduce changes", and a later section describes follower-first testing as a change already reported. The post, last updated June 5, 2026, cites no TikTok statement or test data.

Other blogs then repeated it as fact. PostEverywhere calls it "the biggest algorithm change of 2026" and quotes Weis. [SocialPilot](https://www.socialpilot.co/blog/tiktok-algorithm) dates it to late 2025 and adds that it is "not officially confirmed by TikTok."

TikTok's own texts point the other way. Its 2020 Newsroom post says "neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos" are direct factors in recommendation. Its 2026 viewer guide says the For You feed is focused on helping people discover creators "beyond the ones you already know." Follow relationships do count: the Transparency Center lists them among the signals. A signal is not a test stage.

The strongest case for the claim is simple: followers do see new videos in the Following feed, and their reactions are early data. That is plausible, but it is not evidence of a gate that holds a video back from non-followers.

## Claim 3: "The algorithm switched to Oracle in April 2026" mixes a plan with a date

This claim has a real base, so separate the parts.

**What is official.** Executive Order 14352 of September 25, 2025 requires that recommendation models using US user data be "retrained and monitored" by trusted security partners. On January 23, 2026, the new TikTok USDS Joint Venture said it "will retrain, test, and update the content recommendation algorithm on U.S. user data," with the algorithm secured in Oracle's US cloud. That post gave no timeline.

**What was reported.** On February 16, 2026, CNBC quoted a Forrester analyst saying that, anecdotally, most users find "the algorithm hasn't meaningfully changed." On May 29, 2026, Senator Ed Markey wrote to TikTok USDS that it had "failed to explain" what retraining means. We could not open the letter itself; this is how press coverage quoted it.

**What is rumour.** [SocialPilot](https://www.socialpilot.co/blog/tiktok-algorithm) says the US feed "moved onto" an Oracle-retrained model and that the transition "landed in Q2 2026." Its cited source is a Spectrum News piece from April 19, 2026. That piece reports user experiences, such as more repeat videos and lower views for one creator. It includes no statement from TikTok, the joint venture or the US government.

Verdict: retraining is an official plan. A switch on a known date is not documented. If your reach changed in spring 2026, a retrained model is one possible cause among many, not a proven one. Our guide to [the US algorithm after the joint venture](https://fastclips.app/learn/tiktok-us-algorithm-joint-venture) covers the deal in detail.

## Claim 4: "A For You refresh now takes several days" traces back to one social post

SocialBee's TikTok updates page, in its March 2026 section, says the refresh "now takes several days to complete," and that the app shows popular videos during that time. Its cited source is a post on Threads by a single user. A French blog, [Ruche Pollen](https://ruche-pollen.com/blog-social-media/tiktok-modifie-lalgorithme-du-for-you-refresh-etale-sur-plusieurs-jours), repeated the claim on March 25, 2026, and admitted that TikTok did not give the exact duration.

TikTok's own description is narrower. Its guide says a refresh lets a viewer "view a fresh feed as if you've just signed up," then tailor it by engaging with "popular and trending content." So the popular-content part is official. The multi-day part has no TikTok source.

For clippers, the claim matters little either way. A refresh is a viewer action. You cannot trigger it, and we found no TikTok tool that shows which viewers did it. See [viewer controls](https://fastclips.app/learn/tiktok-viewer-controls-manage-topics) for the controls that do affect your audience.

## Claim 5: "TikTok boosts Shop content" reverses the only official rule

PostEverywhere's 2026 trends post, published March 17, 2026, says TikTok's algorithm "actively promotes content with product links" and that videos that drive purchases "get distribution boosts." It cites no source.

TikTok's guidelines describe the opposite kind of rule. In markets where TikTok Shop is available, TikTok says: "we reduce visibility of content directing users to purchase products off-platform." LIVE sessions that do this are ineligible for the For You feed. Commercial content must be disclosed, and undisclosed commercial content may have its visibility reduced. None of these texts describes a boost for Shop links.

TikTok's Transparency Center also lists "content neutrality" as a design goal: a system "impartial to the content it recommends." That is a goal, not proof. But it is the opposite of the claim, and we found no published data that shows a Shop boost in organic ranking.

For clippers, the practical rule is the official one: do not push viewers to buy off-platform in Shop markets, and disclose paid content.

## What TikTok has actually confirmed about ranking

Myths fill the space that official facts leave empty. These points are documented in TikTok's own texts and are more useful than any rumoured threshold:

- **Prediction scores.** The system predicts likes, shares, comments, skips, finishes, follows, profile visits and "Not Interested" taps, then ranks by the combined score.
- **Video signals.** It reads the time the video was posted, the region, the author's language setting, the soundtrack, the length and the hashtags.
- **A similarity check.** Top-ranked videos that are "too similar", for example with the same sound, are replaced. See [similar clips and campaign saturation](https://fastclips.app/learn/tiktok-similar-clips-campaign-saturation).
- **Fixed rules.** Feeds include creators from the viewer's region, and content from accounts under 16 is not recommended.
- **Freshness and locality.** TikTok's viewer guide says the feed promotes local creators and prioritizes "recent content over older content."
- **Extra checks on rising posts.** TikTok says it double-checks posts that are rising in popularity.
- **Low views are not proof of a penalty.** TikTok says a video with few views "doesn't necessarily mean it broke a rule," and that FYF ineligibility appears in its analytics tool.

## What to do now, step by step

1. **Ask for the source.** When someone announces a new TikTok rule, ask for the TikTok page. If the trail ends at a blog, a video or a social post, treat it as a rumour.
2. **Optimize for watch time, not a pass mark.** Cut dead air, start on the moment, and compare your retention with your own past clips. See [hooks for clips](https://fastclips.app/learn/hooks-for-clips).
3. **Do not hold clips back for followers.** No TikTok source supports a follower-first gate. Post where the audience is, on accounts that match the niche.
4. **Check analytics before you blame the algorithm.** Look for FYF ineligibility notices first. Our guide to [shadowbans](https://fastclips.app/learn/shadowbans) covers the checks.
5. **Keep a dated log.** Record when your reach changed and what you changed. That is the best evidence you can have to test an "algorithm switch" claim for your accounts.
6. **Follow the official commerce rules.** Disclose paid content, and do not send viewers off-platform to buy in TikTok Shop markets.

## Questions

### Is completion rate important on TikTok at all?

Yes. TikTok says it predicts whether a viewer will finish or skip a video, and it said in 2020 that finishing a longer video receives greater weight. What has no source is a fixed percentage that every video must reach.

### Did TikTok's US algorithm change after the joint venture?

The joint venture said on January 23, 2026 that it will retrain the algorithm on US user data. As of October 4, 2026, we found no TikTok statement that dates a switch. Reports of change are user anecdotes.

### Why do so many blogs repeat the same claims?

Blogs often cite each other. In this audit, follower-first testing went from a prediction on one blog to a fact on others, and the April switch rested on one news piece without a TikTok statement.

### Are there other TikTok rumours we did not test here?

Yes. One is that Creator Rewards RPM collapsed after the US deal. We found only anecdotes and no TikTok figures to compare them with, so we could not test it. See [audience commercial value](https://fastclips.app/learn/tiktok-audience-commercial-value).

### Do followers matter for reach at all?

Follow relationships are one of the signals TikTok lists, and followers can see your videos in the Following feed. TikTok's 2020 post says follower count itself is not a direct factor in For You recommendations.

### How will I know if TikTok really changes the algorithm?

TikTok announces product and policy changes in its Newsroom, its Community Guidelines and the Creator Academy. The guidelines carry version dates. A real change usually leaves a dated official text.
