# Is Threads worth posting clips to?

> Is Threads worth posting clips to, and how does it connect to Instagram?

## Short answer

Threads is large enough to test: on July 29, 2026, Meta said it had crossed 500 million monthly active users, and it accepts videos up to 5 minutes, with 9:16 recommended. But it is a text-first conversation app, Meta has announced no creator payout program for it that we could find, Google's new tools for measuring social posts do not cover it, and Meta's 2026 originality rules and Content Protection tool name Facebook and Instagram, not Threads. For most clippers, Threads is a place to repurpose clips that already exist, and it pays only if a campaign accepts Threads views.

## Threads in numbers: what Meta has said

**Threads** is Meta's text-first app for public conversations, launched on July 5, 2023 and built by the Instagram team. You sign in with an Instagram account. Here is what Meta has said about its size and its recommendations since late 2025.

| Date | What Meta said | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| October 29, 2025 | Threads "recently passed 150 million daily actives"; ranking changes in Q3 drove a 10% increase in time spent | Q3 2025 earnings call |
| January 28, 2026 | Recommendation changes in Q4 drove "a 20% lift in Threads time spent"; ads expanding that month to all remaining countries, including the UK, the EU and Brazil | Q4 2025 earnings call |
| February 11, 2026 | Dear Algo launches: users tell Threads in a public post what they want to see more or less of | Meta newsroom |
| March 25, 2026 | Developers can cross-share a Threads post to the user's linked Instagram account as a Story | Threads API changelog |
| July 29, 2026 | "Threads crossed 500 million monthly actives", which Mark Zuckerberg called the fastest growth of any conversation app; the global ads rollout on Threads was completed | Q2 2026 earnings call |

Two different units appear here. **Daily actives** count people who open the app on a given day. **Monthly actives** count people who open it at least once in a month. The 150 million and 500 million figures measure different things, so do not compare them as growth.

The numbers show that Threads has a large audience and that Meta keeps working on its recommendations. They do not show how much of that audience watches video, or how many views a clip gets. Meta has published no figure for video on Threads.

## Video on Threads: the limits

Meta's launch post says Threads posts can include "videos up to 5 minutes in length". The Threads API documentation, which tools that post for you must follow, gives the full specification:

- **Length:** up to 300 seconds (5 minutes).
- **Aspect ratio:** anything between 0.01:1 and 10:1 is accepted, but Meta recommends 9:16 "to avoid cropping or blank space".
- **File:** MOV or MP4, up to 1 GB.
- **Text:** up to 500 characters per post.
- **Carousels:** 2 to 20 items.
- **Posting through the API:** up to 250 posts in a 24-hour moving period per profile.

So the vertical clip you cut for Reels, Shorts or TikTok fits Threads without a new export, and the 5-minute limit leaves room for a longer podcast segment.

We found no Meta announcement of a separate video feed on Threads. Videos appear in the same feed as text posts, so a clip competes with text for attention.

## How Threads decides who sees your clip

Threads has two main feeds. **For you** mixes posts from accounts you follow with recommended posts. **Following** shows only accounts you follow, in time order. Meta has said little in public about how For you ranks posts, beyond the earnings-call statements that ranking changes raised time spent.

Two documented controls affect who can see a clip:

- **Dear Algo** (February 11, 2026): a user writes a public post that starts with "Dear Algo" and says what they want to see more or less of. Threads adjusts that user's feed "for three days". Other users can repost the request to apply the same preferences. It launched in the US, New Zealand, Australia and the UK.
- **Political content:** Instagram and Threads do not proactively recommend political content from accounts a user does not follow on their recommendation surfaces, unless the user turns on a control to see it. Meta first published this on February 9, 2024 and updated the page on January 7, 2025 and May 28, 2025. Clips from political or news podcasts reach mainly followers by default. See [political and news clips on Instagram](https://fastclips.app/learn/instagram-political-content).

Dear Algo matters for niche clip pages. A user who posts "Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts" (Meta's own example) asks for exactly the content a podcast clipper makes. Our reading, which Meta has not stated: text in your post that names the show, the guest and the topic gives the system something to match such requests against, because Threads is built around text.

## Does Threads pay creators?

Not through any program we could find on an official Meta page as of October 4, 2026.

On April 29, 2024, Engadget reported that Meta was testing an invite-only Threads bonus program that offered some creators "up to $5,000", based on post performance or the number of posts. Meta called it a test with terms that varied by participant. We found no Meta page that describes a current Threads payout program, and we found no announcement of ad revenue sharing, even though ads now run on Threads worldwide.

For a clipper, this means Threads income comes from campaigns. A campaign pays only for the platforms its brief names, so check that Threads is on the list before you count Threads views. Live campaign data is on [Clipster campaigns](https://fastclips.app/clipster-campaigns).

## Originality and protection rules on Threads: mostly unwritten

Meta's 2026 originality rules are written for Facebook (March 13, 2026) and Instagram (April 30, 2026). Neither post says it applies to Threads. Facebook's Content Protection tool, launched November 17, 2025, scans "Facebook and Instagram" for copies of a creator's reels. It does not mention Threads either.

This gap cuts two ways. A clip page on Threads faces no published aggregator test today. But nothing stops Meta from extending its rules, and a page built only on reposted clips would then be exposed at once. Our advice is to follow the Instagram standard on Threads too: add context or commentary in the post text and on the video. See [clip originality rules by platform](https://fastclips.app/learn/clip-originality-rules-by-platform).

## What Threads does not give you: Google measurement

Google has built new ways for clip accounts to get and measure traffic from Search and Discover. Threads is outside all of them:

- Google said on September 17, 2025 that Discover would show "posts from X and Instagram and YouTube Shorts". Threads is not named.
- Search Console platform properties, launched on July 7, 2026, support Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube. Threads is not supported.
- Search profiles for creators require 10,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok. Threads followers do not count.

If Google traffic is part of your plan, Threads cannot show you whether it works. See [clips in Google Discover and Search](https://fastclips.app/learn/clips-in-google-discover-and-search).

## Using Threads with Instagram

Threads is tied to Instagram from the start: you sign up with your Instagram account. Two connections are useful for clippers.

**Sharing a Threads post to an Instagram Story.** Since March 25, 2026, the Threads API lets apps cross-share a Threads post to the user's linked Instagram account as a Story. A scheduling tool can now post a clip to Threads and put it in your Instagram Story in one step, which shows the post to Instagram followers who do not use Threads yet.

**One identity, two audiences.** Because the account comes from Instagram, a clip page can carry the same name and look on both. Whether Meta uses Instagram activity to rank Threads posts is not documented, so do not assume a strong Instagram page gives a Threads page reach.

## Fediverse sharing can take your clips outside Meta

Threads has an opt-in feature that no other app in this guide has. Meta calls it **fediverse sharing**. The **fediverse** is a network of independent social servers, such as Mastodon, that exchange posts through an open protocol called ActivityPub.

Meta's launch page, in updates from 2024, says that if you turn sharing on, people on other servers can search for and follow your Threads profile, see and interact with your posts, and share them further. The feature is a beta, and only users aged 18 and over with public profiles can turn it on.

For a clipper, the trade-off is simple. Fediverse sharing can bring a few extra followers from outside Meta. But views on other servers do not appear in Threads' own counts, and a campaign that pays on Threads views will not see them. Copies on other servers are also outside Meta's tools, so a creator cannot track or block them there. If you post campaign clips, leave fediverse sharing off unless the campaign says otherwise. This is our advice; neither Meta nor any campaign we know has published a rule on it.

## A low-effort way to test Threads

1. Confirm that at least one of your campaigns accepts Threads posts. If none does, treat Threads as audience building only.
2. Use the vertical clips you already cut. Threads accepts 9:16 video up to 5 minutes, so no new export is needed.
3. Write a real post, not just a link or an emoji. Name the show, the guest and the point of the clip in the first line, within the 500-character limit.
4. Add your own view in the text. A one-line take gives readers something to reply to, and it keeps you ahead of any future originality rule.
5. Avoid political clips if you need non-follower reach, unless your audience has chosen to see political content.
6. Post for 30 days and compare views per clip with the same clips on Instagram and X. Keep Threads only if the numbers justify the time.
7. Do not flood the feed. A conversation app rewards replies, and a stream of identical clip posts gives people nothing to reply to.

## Questions

### How long can a video be on Threads?

Up to 5 minutes. Meta's launch post says so, and the Threads API documentation sets the limit at 300 seconds with a 1 GB file size.

### Do I need an Instagram account to use Threads?

The launch post says you log in with your Instagram account. In January 2026, the Threads API changelog also mentioned Threads profiles without a linked Instagram account, so check the current sign-up options in the app.

### Can I schedule clips to Threads with a tool?

Yes, if the tool uses the Threads API. The API allows up to 250 posts in a 24-hour period per profile and supports video, carousels and, since March 25, 2026, cross-sharing to an Instagram Story.

### Does Meta's Content Protection block copies on Threads?

Meta's announcement says the tool scans Facebook and Instagram. It does not mention Threads.

### Is Threads bigger than X?

Meta reported 500 million monthly actives for Threads on July 29, 2026. X uses different measures, so we do not compare the two numbers here. For campaign work, the question that matters is which platforms a campaign pays for.

### Can I see how many people watched my clip on Threads?

Meta has published no definition of a Threads video view that we could find, unlike YouTube and TikTok. The Threads API added a clicks metric for links on July 2, 2025. Before you post campaign clips, ask the campaign which Threads number it reads and how it collects it.
